I grew up in Arizona and western Colorado before earning my BA in English and psychology from The University of Michigan in 1991. My first career in advertising lasted 6 years - but felt much longer once I realized I was working around the clock to indulge the whims of "mad men." I rediscovered my internal compass, chose a new path, and began the work toward my M.A. and Ph.D. in counseling psychology at The University of North Texas. I completed my APA-accredited internship at the unusually-named, but highly-regarded Salesmanship Club Youth and Family Center, a Dallas family therapy agency. Having recently been renamed the "Momentous Institute," my early advertising self can only shake her head in wonder. Nevertheless, the clinical training was outstanding. I continued with my post-doctoral experience at Southwestern University Counseling Center near Austin, TX, and have been licensed as a psychologist since 2005.
Over the past 15 years, my work has included providing therapy and psychological assessment at large and small university counseling centers, community mental health clinics and family therapy agencies, schools, adolescent treatment programs, and in my own private practices in Austin and Denver. I have also enjoyed supervising doctoral and post-doctoral psychologist candidates.
In addition to clinical work, I love university teaching, and have taught undergraduate courses at The University of North Texas (Introductory Psychology, Child Development, Psychology of Women) and graduate courses at Texas State University (Assessment in Counseling) for 5 years. I have presented at national conferences and have published research in my primary research area of creativity/giftedness/mood disorders as well as my secondary research area, custodial grandparenting. Over the past year, I also created, developed and facilitated a series of MBSR-based "Practical Mindfulness" workshops at Pura Vida's ethos studio in Cherry Creek.
I love being back in Colorado after spending 20 years away from the state that feels most like home to me. In my free time, I enjoy yoga, hiking, skiing/snowshoeing, going to cultural events, creating award-winning Peeps dioramas (2nd place in the Denver Post, 2013) and spending time with my irreverent 8-year-old daughter.
